About Norman Brooks
Norman Brooks was a singer, songwriter, pianist, and actor. He was born 19 Aug 1928 in Montreal. He died on September 14th, 2006. His voice resembled that of Al Jolson, and he often sang in the Jolson style, as well as in a more personal style.
He began his career in his late teens, singing with his sister Annie Brooks. In the early 1950s he was singing in theatres, such as the Seville in Montreal and the Casino Theatre in Toronto. At this time he made two 78s for Canadian Victor.
In 1953 he appeared in nightclubs in New York. He recorded Hello Sunshine for Zodiac label, which was established expressly for Brooks. He was popular in the USA during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1975 he appeared on Broadway in "The Magic of Jolson". In 1979 he performed at PDA.
Brooks played the part of Al Jolson in "The Best Things in Life Are Free". He had dramatic roles in "The Block" in 1963 and in "Oceans Eleven" in 1965.

you can tell this is 78rpm
I love this song and also hello sunshine goodbye rain. I was 9 years old when it came out and could never forget it. Thanks for sharing
Feel good music! What a lovely contrast to todays violent rap.
I've got this 45...Fun tune!
Wayne, do you know Jimmy Galen? I am trying to find him. I know he used to play with the Barrelhouse Banjos, I do have a recording of Congratulate Me, it's on 45 RPM. I didn't realize that this recording was never released.
It took me quite a while but thanks to hurricane Sandy I had some idle time to post Congratulate Me and I found Some by Norman and The Barrel House Banjos which I promised in an earlier comment
Great Song! I remember hearing the band in the 70's and they were great. I have a 45 RPM of "Congratulate Me" signed by Jimmy Galen. Does anyone know where this guy is these days? I would love to know if he still preforms. Can anyone help me look him up?

You're welcome!
Thank you so much for posting this song! I have this record for my Victrola & it's my favorite. I wrote down all the lyrics & have them saved in my phone.
Let us know if you post it, I'd like to hear it.
The Congratulate Me/I Found Some 45 was only a promotional recording and never released. Recording was an attempt to break away from Jolson association and therefore billed himself under the name Calvin Ram (also name on record). I played banjo in a band (Barrelhouse Banjo's) in Somers Point NJ where we met & performed with Norman. We (Barrelhouse) along with studio musicians made the recording at the Opal Recording Studios in NY in I think 1977. I have copy and will try to post.
Sounds like he is doing an Al Jolson impersonation. Would have guessed this recording was made 15 years earlier than 1953. Good arrangement.
@MISisback That's quite a find, thanks for posting the records!
