The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Jazz Impressions Of Eurasia

jessieautumn1234

Review by Jessie Autumn Johnson

Jazz Impressions of Eurasia, the 1964 album by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, is a captivating and innovative musical journey that takes the listener on a tour of the diverse cultures of Eurasia. The album features Brubeck's signature piano style, which blends classical, jazz, and ethnic influences, and is accompanied by the virtuosic drumming of Joe Morello, the melodic saxophone of Paul Desmond, and the driving bass of Eugene Wright.

The album's opening track, "Nomad," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its hypnotic Middle Eastern-inspired melody and driving rhythm. "Brandenburg Gate" showcases Brubeck's mastery of counterpoint and features a dynamic interplay between the quartet members. "The Golden Horn" is a haunting ballad that captures the essence of Istanbul, while "Thank You (Dziekuje)" is a joyful tribute to Poland that incorporates traditional Polish melodies.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Plain Song," a beautiful and contemplative piece that showcases Brubeck's ability to create a mood with just a few simple chords. "The Eurasian Suite" is a sprawling and ambitious composition that seamlessly blends elements of classical music, jazz, and traditional Eurasian melodies. The album's closing track, "Koto Song," is a serene and meditative piece that features Brubeck on the Japanese koto, a traditional stringed instrument.

Great tune. Sounds nothing like Calcutta to me. More like Harlem, frankly. But great never the less!
