"Magical" is right.
h ä r l i gt .. fader Bach tror ja njuter i sin himmel !!
It could never get any better than this...passion, talent, sheer joy. This quartet had it all...
Was this the best Brubeck quartet of all time or does the later edition with Morello and Wright come close, let's declare it a dead heat, after fifty years I love to pull it off the shelf and play.
Masterfully done, Paul Desmond! If you are listening to this, you have a great taste of music!
hermosooo... elegante... sin palabras para este tema. :-)
I am a 20 yo guy from New Delhi and I am so glad I stumbled upon this somehow
definitely something I will listen to regularly

Also, see Stardust with Desmond and Mulligan!
Interesting to read comments that stretch back several years now. Improvisation is sort of like an exploration. There is the original tune and then one can branch out into side chambers as if in a wondrous cave system. The musician can create their own crystalline enchantment.
Usually, the original melody gets a run through, but here we get only the variations. There's probably an assumption - "they all know how it goes". Brubeck did this sometimes with various groups during his career. Great fun on YouTube to listen to 4 or 5 interpretations of the same song in a row. Individualism - Americanism - Jazz!

The original copy of this album had an extra chorus of Paul Desmond. His last chorus has been edited out for some reason. It is fully intact on the South African version of the LP which I bought in the early 1970's.
nice NICE
Every version I've heard of this piece seems so different, i love it
Thanks for the info.
I transcribed the "Stardust" solo on the Mulligan/Desmond "Save a Life" CD. That got me hooked. I will next seek out all the examples you mention. It will be a great comparison. Speaking of dissertations, I studied the "Charlie Parker" by Owens several years ago and it really pointed my ears in the right direction. Looking forward to Desmond - so lyrical. In just a few days I have a whole new concept to chase after.
Thanks again

PS. I played at the Wilshire Ebell many times in L.A. Nice Theater.
asi termino la noche ..
I checked out the Debussy Quote and it is true. Just started studying/transcribing Desmond and it led me to Debussy and this video. I could her the French sound in his alto. Opens up a whole new perspective for me. I've been a jazz player for over 40 years and find something new every day. What a wonderful art! (Can't say I enjoy Brubeck in this stage of his career. He played better before the accident in Hawaii. Desmond is thrilling.
music to my soul......
Thanks for posting this nectar....
