The Tony Williams Lifetime - Emergency

Review by Anna Flávia Horta de Almeida

Emergency, the album by Tony Williams Lifetime, is a masterpiece of fusion jazz. Released in 1969, the album features a power-packed trio of Williams on drums, John McLaughlin on guitar, and Larry Young on organ. The album's six tracks are a stunning display of the trio's virtuosity and creativity, blending jazz, rock, and funk into a unique and exciting sound.

The album opens with "Emergency," a frenzied and intense piece that showcases Williams' drumming skills and McLaughlin's lightning-fast guitar work. "Beyond Games" is a more laid-back track, featuring Young's soulful organ and McLaughlin's melodic guitar lines. "Where" is a funky tune with a catchy groove, while "Vashkar" is a complex and intricate piece that highlights the trio's musical agility.

The album's standout track is "Via the Spectrum Road," a 13-minute epic that takes the listener on a journey through different musical styles and moods. The track features a stunning guitar solo by McLaughlin and a powerful drum solo by Williams, as well as some of the album's most memorable melodies.

Tony Williams formed Lifetime after leaving the Group in 1969, around the time was finished. The formative trio included guitarist (who turned down Davis' offer to join his group since he felt he would more likely be able to play his own compositions with Williams) and Hammond organ innovator . Ex-Cream bass player Jack Bruce joined just after the first album was recorded for live dates and the second album, after which McLaughlin left in order to pursue his own career and Bruce left for other projects including his own career. Larry Young remained for the third album (in 1971), which featured a much larger ensemble. For the fourth Lifetime album the personnel had changed completely as the direction shifted further toward something less radical. The original formation recorded two albums ( and ) and a single called - a McLaughlin composition that was also included to huge success in his second Mahavishnu Orchestra album. Lifetime's sound was on the very cutting edge of fusion for many listeners. Loads of distortion, unconventional lyrics and erratic drumming were the trademarks of this remarkable project.

According to John McLaughlin, this song (Vashkar) was played on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (guest host: Flip Wilson) in 1970. McLaughlin left Lifetime after two albums due to his being dismayed at Monte Kay and Jack Lewis (mentioned as "the management") who gave Flip Wilson more attention, with "The Flip Wilson Show" than Tony Williams' group itself who ended up playing at small sized venues if I'm not mistaken.
