Hugely successful female vocal group formed in 1961, after initially after being called from 1959 to 1960. Their best-known and most stable lineup was Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson, in which configuration they became Motown's top act of the 1960s, though of that line-up only Wilson remained in the group by the time of the 1970s disco incarnation represented here.
The Supremes changed name in early 1967 to Diana Ross & The Supremes. Motown president stated that the name change was done so that Motown could demand more money from live bookings, but rumors began to spread of an approaching Diana Ross solo career.
At that time member Florence Ballard had begun drinking and occasionally missing performance and, by June 1967, was replaced by Cindy Birdsong, a member of Patti LaBelle & The Blue Belles.
In January 1970, Diana Ross & The Supremes gave their final performance and Ross began her solo career. Jean Terrell replaced Diana as the lead singer and thereby renaming the group back to The Supremes.
Inducted into Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 (Performer).

Love Diana’s version. Reached #7 on the r&b charts
The Diana Ross version is better. This is too busy.
Great track
Beautiful photoessay, to accompany this amazing duet. Thank you so much.
I prefer Diana’s version
Classic Motown
Jean Terrell is the real deal. ?
Love Cindy's solo part on this too. ?

Levi, Obie, Lawrence ,Mr. Duke,, Miss Mary,, Cindy & Jean.. Great Classic Motown 70s album
Was this version ever released? Really cool song...and the last few seconds of the ending is EVERYTHING!!
Maybe it's me being biased but The Four Tops and The Supremes really were the magnificent seven. Could listen to them all day long....
Kicks the arse of the original. Fuck yeah
Excellent Motown.
This version of "REACH OUT AND TOUCH" is far better than the "failure to launch" of Diane Ross first released Record Single as a "solo act".
That barely made it to the Top # 20 Billboard List while THE SUPREMES "Up The Ladder To The Roof" went Top # 10 on their first release after Diane's departure :-)

Diana's supposed "Failure to launch" Top 20 hit is nothing to snark at. She was a "new act" and was nominated as such for a Grammy. As a new solo act her chart placement was very good. Of course the Supremes would chart higher; they were the name act and loyalty to the Supremes was still very high. It was a great record as well. The solo's of Cindy and Mary were enough to shelve this alleged superior version, IMO. I love Cindy but this is not a good showing for her. Mary is flat. I appreciate the post but to say this version is better is a stretch, real stretch.
ignore him. he is a dieheart Diana ross fan. as far as he is concern its Diana and only Diana

What does your sentence mean?. Do you like it or not and if not why?

Excellent record in every respect. Deserved to be issued as a single.
This is a dynamic, and in my opinion as good as Ross' version. But Diana's charted top 20 and this sunk. And this version was right between two top 20 hits ("River Deep, Mountain High" and "Nathan Jones").
