Rachmaninoff by Artur Rubinstein and Philadelphia Orchestra - Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No2

Review by Maria Fleischman

Artur Rubinstein's performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philadelphia Orchestra is a stunning masterpiece. Rubinstein's skillful playing is evident as he expertly navigates the complex and emotive score. The orchestra, under the direction of Eugene Ormandy, provides a rich and dynamic accompaniment, perfectly complementing Rubinstein's piano work.

Throughout the album, Rubinstein displays his virtuosity, effortlessly executing the concerto's intricate and demanding passages. The second movement, with its hauntingly beautiful melody, is particularly mesmerizing, as Rubinstein's fingers dance across the keys in perfect harmony with the orchestra.

The overall sound quality of the album is excellent, capturing the full range and depth of the orchestra's sound, while still allowing Rubinstein's piano to shine through. The recording is a testament to the skill and passion of both Rubinstein and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and is sure to delight fans of classical music.

I found this watching "the seventh veil "with James Mason rip ? and in the comments directed me to this heavenly concerto, being poor doesn't mean you can't recognize beauty in music or paintings, now 68(2023), what does one do but ?, oggi being Valentines' day, merci beaucoup for the enchantment ?????????

Everytime i hear this piece tears well up my eyes..
the drama of the Russian history and the beautiful heart of its resilient people are reflected beautifully by Rachmaninoff's creation, by the wonderful Rubinstein and orchestra rendering...

My favorite recording of the work. I like the fact that he takes the coda at a reasonable pace, not too fast like most soloists (including the composer!) do.

i played this number early in my piano career and in college with an orchestra and I still thrill with every note, just listening to the inimitable Rubinstein, whom I auditioned under as a child, as a young member of the National Fraternity of Student Musicians. I didn't realize the beauty of it then, today, it brings tears to my eyes!
