Review by Héctor A. Tablero

English Spring by Hallé, Sir Mark Elder is a beautiful and captivating album that showcases the talents of the renowned orchestra and its conductor. The album features a selection of works by some of the most celebrated English composers, including Edward Elgar, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Benjamin Britten.

From the opening notes of Elgar's Serenade for Strings, the listener is transported to a world of lush harmonies and soaring melodies. The Hallé Orchestra's performance is exquisite, with each section of the orchestra contributing to a rich and nuanced sound.

The album also features Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, a hauntingly beautiful piece that showcases the orchestra's ability to create a sense of otherworldly atmosphere. Sir Mark Elder's interpretation of this piece is particularly noteworthy, as he brings out the nuances and subtleties of the composition.

Another highlight of the album is Britten's Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge. The Hallé Orchestra's performance of this piece is both energetic and precise, with each variation highlighting a different aspect of the orchestra's sound.
