Fred McDowell - My Home Is In The Delta

Review by Bonnie Besserer

My Home Is In The Delta, the classic blues album by Fred McDowell, is a timeless masterpiece that captures the essence of Delta blues in its purest form. The album, which was originally recorded in 1964, features McDowell's soulful vocals and masterful slide guitar playing, accompanied by sparse but powerful percussion.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Kokomo Blues," a hauntingly beautiful song that showcases McDowell's ability to convey deep emotion through his music. The song's simple, repetitive melody and lyrics are deceptively powerful, and McDowell's slide guitar playing is nothing short of mesmerizing.

Another standout track is "Shake 'Em On Down," a rollicking, upbeat song that perfectly captures the joy and energy of Delta blues. McDowell's vocals are full of life and energy, and his slide guitar playing is both intricate and infectious.

About Fred McDowell

American 'hill country blues' singer and guitarist. Born: January 12, 1906 in Rossville, Tennessee, USA Died: July 3, 1972 in Memphis, Tennessee, USA (Cancer) Also often called "Mississippi Fred McDowell". After decades of playing for small local gatherings, McDowell was recorded in 1959 by roving folklore musicologist and , on their Southern Journey field-recording trip. With interest in blues and folk music rising in the United States at the time, McDowell's field recordings for Lomax caught the attention of blues aficionados and record producers, and within a couple of years, he had finally become a professional musician and recording artist in his own right. His LPs proved quite popular, and he performed at festivals and clubs all over the world. McDowell continued to perform blues in the north Mississippi style much as he had for decades, sometimes on electric guitar rather than acoustic guitar. He was particularly renowned for his mastery of slide guitar, a style he said he first learned using a pocketknife for a slide and later a polished beef rib bone. He ultimately settled on the clearer sound he got from a glass slide, which he wore on his ring finger. While he famously declared, "I do not play no rock and roll," he was not averse to associating with younger rock musicians. He coached on slide guitar technique and was reportedly flattered by ' rather straightforward version of his "You Gotta Move" on their 1971 album Sticky Fingers.

recorded the Sunday after the Kennedy assassination. by that day the alleged perpetrator was gunned down on live TV. there's an eerie yet chilling feeling in Mississippi's Fred's voice as though things will never quite be the same as what they were.

Back in'73 I was 9 years old and the whole family was going to the Woolworth's and there was this old black man playin' his beat up guitar out front. He had a busted bottle on his finger and I remember him moanin' and wailin' like he was buryin his first love, his mother and first born all on the same day. My family walked in, but that slide playin stopped me in my tracks. I stood there for prob 10 minutes before my dad came out and tanned my hide real good for wanderin off. This song reminded me of that day

Waaay back when I was young, I was lucky enough to spend a few days with Mr. McDowell back in 1969. I was a young white-guy just getting into the country blues, a guy working in a guitar-shop in Memphis told me about him, an old bluesman "down 55 a piece, maybe forty miles or so" in Como, Mississippi. Just ask at the general store on 51 where Mister McDowell lives. So I hitch-hiked down, and the lady at the store told me how to find his place down the road.I found him in a field driving a tractor. I went up and asked if he was Mr. McDowell and he said yes. I said a man up in Memphis said you might have time to show me a few things on the guitar. He laughed and said come on up to the house later after he finished his chores. Which I did. I spent the next couple of nights sleeping in an old abandoned pickup down the road, tried to practice in the day and then walk over to his house in the evenings. I was not a bad guitarist, but on electric rock and roll. Country blues and slide were pretty new to me and I wasn't very good, but I still learned a bit.I'd never heard of him before then and didn't know he was anybody more than "Mr. McDowell." Although I soon learned later he was famous in that genre. I went back a couple of years later, but he'd died. And his wife too, Miss Mae I called her. I've paid my respects at their graves in the churchyard several times since then, whenever I drive to New Orleans I stop on the way down. I didn't know how lucky I was back then.

so glad to see i can still return to this ol' jukebox when the sap gets a little too thick. sustenance, indeed. and if we never completely come out of the wilderness again, luckily i can always return to where it all began... where it doesn't feel so crowded. or so cold. and where encyclopedia like recall is not confused with true wisdom. so thank you...

You're too kind. And what about this... Few people have been able to carry on the emotion of a guy like BWJ the way Fred did. These kind of songs are sustenance for the soul! Either you got it or you don't. Well, well, well......

Yours.
