Review by Deep Kapadia

Emerson, Lake & Palmer's Miami 1973 1st Night album is a mesmerizing live recording that captures the band's electrifying performance at the Gusman Cultural Center in Miami, Florida. The album features the trio's signature blend of progressive rock, classical music, and jazz, and showcases their virtuosic musicianship and showmanship.

The album opens with a thunderous rendition of "Hoedown," a composition by Aaron Copland that the band had adapted into a rock classic. The track sets the tone for the rest of the album, which includes epic versions of ELP's hits like "Take a Pebble," "Lucky Man," and "Tarkus."

One of the highlights of the album is the 30-minute long "Tarkus," a suite that showcases Keith Emerson's keyboard wizardry, Greg Lake's soulful vocals and bass playing, and Carl Palmer's explosive drumming. The band's improvisational skills are on full display, as they explore different moods and textures, from the ominous "Eruption" to the playful "Stones of Years."

Another standout track is "Take a Pebble," which features a beautiful piano intro by Emerson and a haunting vocal performance by Lake. The band's use of dynamics and tempo changes is impressive, and the song builds to a climactic finale with Palmer's thunderous drumming.

Thanks for the stupendous upload! This was a few days before Brain Salad Surgery was released in the U.S., and the audience is delighting in this totally fresh music! Wonderful, thanks.

This is great, thanks for all the ELP stuff you have posted. Interesting that Pink Floyd had a similar strategy of playing their new songs first in concert, before getting to songs the audience would know better.

Duke, did you record this show yourself? I was there that night and I distinctly remember feeling disappointed that they did not play "Hoedown." It was an absolutely killer show aside from that, so my disappointment was minor and shortlived. As they played the Miami Jai Alai Fronton for two consecutive nights, I think it's highly likely this could be from the 15th and not the 14th.

Bugs in the electric drums had to be tweaked out yet. Still a strong as hell performance.
