Review by Daniela Ervolino

Dexter Gordon At Montmartre is a live album that captures the legendary saxophonist at the height of his powers. Recorded in Copenhagen in 1964, the album features Gordon leading a quartet that includes pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath.

Throughout the album, Gordon's playing is characterized by his signature blend of lyricism, swing, and bluesy grit. His solos are full of inventive melodic ideas, soulful phrasing, and a deep sense of swing. Drew, Pedersen, and Heath provide expert support, with each musician contributing tasteful solos and tight ensemble playing.

Highlights of the album include Gordon's soulful rendition of "Fried Bananas," his bluesy take on "You've Changed," and the swinging "Lady Bird." The album also features a stunning version of John Coltrane's "Moment's Notice," which showcases Gordon's virtuosic playing and his ability to navigate complex harmonic changes with ease.
