If you think Gurley was a bad guitarist you should have your opinion privileges taken away. He made some truly amazing sounds come out of his amplifier.
Janis fans ... This is the best album since FAREWELL SONG - which is also a treasure .

by the way,,,this show was interesting to hear cuz its somethin different- but Gurley was a lame guitarist. Sorry - not tyin to be a bummer but I play guitar. Have most of my life and this sounds like a mess. Janis colored it all in with her presence and her unbelievable voice and soul. Just being honest. Messy band. althoughSam Andrew was more "trained" and could play note for note and he was a great straight blues player- as we hear in the kozmic Blues Band. Just sayin....
It it wasn't for Janis, no one would ever have heard of Big Brother and the HC-- ask anyone on the street today who is JJ and theyll tell you; ask who is BB and THC?? and they'll say I don't know..

Lame is in the ear of the behearder (or whatever). I think Gurley was an exciting guitarist.
Janis MADE this band. Gurley or not. SHE made this band listenable. Thye had very little strength as a rhythm section. Forget guitars for a minute and think about how lame they were compared to most bands of the time. Janis herself made them friggin famous.......for a time. They dogged her around in their last days and she had to leave. Truth! Gurley was a strung out creepo who was full of himself and thought he was the man. Janis wore the pants in this band heheh! She is the queen ya see?

If Janis hadn't cast such a huge shadow (and rightfully so), James Gurley might have gotten the recognition he deserved. Killer guitarist.
