Artie Shaw Et Son Orchestre - Out Of Nowhere Im Coming Virginia

Review by Kai Mann

Artie Shaw Et Son Orchestre's album "Out Of Nowhere Im Coming Virginia" is a delightful collection of jazz music that transports listeners back to the golden age of swing. The album features some of Artie Shaw's most iconic tracks, including "Begin the Beguine," "Frenesi," and "Stardust," which showcase the band's incredible talent and Shaw's virtuosic clarinet playing.

The album opens with the upbeat and energetic "Begin the Beguine," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. The band's tight arrangements and impeccable timing make each track a joy to listen to, and the musicians' individual solos showcase their impressive technical abilities.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Frenesi," which features a Latin-inspired rhythm and a catchy melody that will have listeners tapping their feet. Shaw's clarinet playing is particularly impressive on this track, and the band's percussion section adds a lively and infectious energy to the song.

Another highlight of the album is "Stardust," a hauntingly beautiful ballad that showcases Shaw's lyrical and expressive playing. The band's lush arrangement adds depth and texture to the song, creating a dreamy and romantic atmosphere.

Almost two and a half minutes of silence? That was like watching a fat man take a shower - no thanks.

A turntable with crankshaft - how roccocco. Di Vinci would have approved.
Anyone got Shaw's "At Sundown"? It really swings and is one of my favorites by Artie.Lost the tape I had it on.

Nice Tune... nice phonograph... but... yeah... a little bit too much nothing... puts a big pause when I "Play All" my Artie Shaw tubes... had to reject it. There's another nice version on YouTube without the silence...

78rpm pressing: I'm Coming Virginia - Artie Shaw and his Orchestra, 1939 - Bluebird 10320

Rather a long wind up. It's a good thing we weren't let down by the music. There is something called "video editing software".

@Destry7 Sorry Pal, no electronics of any kind on this portable Victrola! Did you notice the hand crank on the side?, and the way he set down the diaphram stylus on the record? No, this is strictly old school, I'm talkin' Tommy Edison, Bud, What you are hearing is pure mechanical amplification through a megaphone. I should know, I have a parlor model in my dining room, and it's nearly 100 years old!

The title was inspired by, of all things, lousy restaurant service.

Love it. My first love and myself saved one year, 2/6 per week (1/8 of a £1) to buy our first wind up gramaphone. Our biggest expense was to buy a box needles. Desaster when we once had to replace the main spring. We pledged that whatever happened between us, we would always have each other in our thoughts each time we hear Artie Shaw; Last month, we met again after 50 years!
