F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C ! As half-Rumanian myself, I cannot but be deeply moved by this music and performance. And my father can be found here on YouTube playing the original version for piano.
Like eating cotton candy!
Of the 15 or so records in my parents record collection, this is the one I practically wore out. Oh, there was Marilyn Monroe and South Pacific and a few others I liked but none came close to this. Love the athleticism of the conductor.

Si cand te gandesti ca un nimeni in ale muzicii clasicii, marea falseta aroganta si agramata gheorghiu, si-a permis sa jigneasca intreg poporul roman prin cuvintele urate la adresa genialului si marelui nostru roman, Enescu! Dar in ciuda atacurilor venite din partea needucatilor precum aceasta infama, numele si creatia lui Enescu vor straluci tot mai puternic, bucurand milioane de oameni!
I just had my first experience meeting a Romanian lady and asked her about leading classical music composers from Romania (knowing as I did, very little). She suggested this very piece and I must say I was thrilled by every aspect of this presentation, from the exciting beauty of the piece, and the joyful enthusiasm of the entire orchestra. Very uplifting!

I love this piece so much! It begins so simply and sweetly, like a shy young man inviting a pretty girl to dance. Then little by little it becomes more passionate until the whole village is dancing in a Dionysiac frenzy! It was a joy to watch the conductor dancing in his own Dionysiac frenzy, and the musicians keeping up magnificently.
Muy lento y falta de carácter. Lo tocan como si fuera un vals vienés. Y esta música no debe ser interpretada así. Requiere de intérpretes que estén dispuestos a acabar despeinados. No es música de fantasía como si fuera el musical de la Bella y la bestia. Interpretación decepcionante.

As it's getting on toward autumn, and I've just been watching a cozy video about Ukrainian homemaking and cooking, I was in the mood to hear Romanian Rhapsody 1. I've loved this piece since I heard it in elementary school back in the 1960's. The piece is so evocative of a sunny autumn day at first, then I think of sunset and wild celebration. Just loved hearing it again!
