Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra - Dont Give Up The Ship At A Little Church Affair

Review by Kassidy Kearey

Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra's album, "Don't Give Up The Ship At A Little Church Affair," is a delightful collection of swing and jazz classics. The album features the smooth and soulful vocals of Edythe Wright and Jack Leonard, as well as the impressive instrumental performances of the orchestra.

The album opens with the upbeat and energetic "Song of India," which sets the tone for the rest of the record. The orchestra's tight rhythms and swinging horns provide the perfect backdrop for Wright and Leonard's silky smooth vocals.

Other standout tracks include the playful "Boogie Woogie" and the romantic "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You." The orchestra's musicianship is particularly impressive on the instrumental tracks, such as "Trombonology" and "The Minor Goes a Muggin'."

About Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra

Orchestra under the leading of Tommy Dorsey, formed in 1935 and disbanded a first time in 1946. By late 1946, the band business was indeed having problems. In December 1946, some members of the band (including Tommy Dorsey) were calling it quits. However, less than two years later, he formed an orchestra with exactly the same name (Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra), but with different members. Dorsey's orchestra was known primarily for its renderings of ballads at dance tempos, frequently with singers such as Jack Leonard and Frank Sinatra.
