Tomahawk - Tomahawk

Review by richaeld jst

Tomahawk's self-titled debut album is a wild ride through a variety of genres, blending elements of hard rock, punk, and experimental music to create a unique sound that defies easy categorization. The band, which features members of Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, and The Jesus Lizard, is clearly comfortable pushing boundaries and experimenting with different sounds and styles.

From the opening track "Flashback," with its driving guitar riffs and pounding drums, to the eerie and atmospheric "God Hates a Coward," Tomahawk showcases the band's versatility and willingness to take risks. The album is full of surprises, with unexpected shifts in tempo and instrumentation that keep the listener engaged and on their toes.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "101 North," which features a hypnotic bassline and haunting vocals that build to a frenzied climax. Another highlight is "Desastre Natural," which incorporates Latin rhythms and percussion for a truly unique sound.

About Tomahawk

Punk's Not Red band from Russia.{;}Tomahawk is an experimental alternative metal/alternative rock supergroup from the United States. They formed in 2000 when Fantômas, Mr. Bungle and Faith No More singer Mike Patton and The Jesus Lizard guitar player Duane Denison started swapping tapes with the intention of collaborating. Duane Denison then recruited ex-Helmet drummer John Stanier (also playing with Battles), while Mike Patton brought Melvins/Cows bass player Kevin Rutmanis into the fold. Rutmanis left the band after the 2nd album (Mit Gas) and was replaced by Trevor Dunn (Fantômas, Mr; Bungle) for the 4th album (Oddfellows).

I think the major problem is most of the super groups you hear off tend to be so filled with the mainstream bandmembers it makes it sounds the same as everything else. These guys are far enough from the mainstream sound at the best of times that this was bound to be a match made in musical heaven.
