Review by Paul Awol

The album "The Great Melodies of Tchaikovsky" by Tchaikovsky is a masterpiece that showcases the composer's unparalleled talent and creativity. The album comprises some of Tchaikovsky's most famous works, including the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, the Nutcracker Suite, and the Swan Lake Ballet Suite.

The album is a perfect blend of classical music and symphonic orchestration, creating a captivating and enchanting listening experience. The album's sound quality is impeccable, with every note and instrument beautifully captured, highlighting the nuances of Tchaikovsky's compositions.

Each track on the album is a testament to Tchaikovsky's genius, with his ability to evoke emotions and tell stories through music. The Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, for instance, is a powerful and moving piece that captures the tragic love story of the two protagonists. The Nutcracker Suite, on the other hand, is a joyous and playful composition that perfectly encapsulates the magic of Christmas.

What clear and concise conducting. It's like the conducting serves the music rather than the modern opposite.

The sound in the strings is duplicated nowhere for its richness of tone. I sang with the Philadelphia Orchestra several times and with him twice; an Old School Master. What a privilege.

After hearing dozens of versions out there, I decide to go back to square one - and the best!

My Bass Professor Carl Torello in this orchestra always said you can identify the Sound of Philadelphia by this Great Orchestra. Professor Torello was a great musician from a legendary music family and I was taught the great lush Philadelphia style of bass playing. I miss him tremendously but he lives on in these recordings. One of the best recordings from that Great Master Conductor Ormandy.

Anthony Jones your professor of the double bass is spot on about the great Eugene Ormandy.
Having spoken to both Carl and Ormandy many times -- I used to tell the Maestro the music simply dripped off him ! And if you watch the Baton technique - the color he is able to achieve along with the intensity

Having been a tympanist, I love the tympani continuing until the very end, even though Tchaikovsky didn't compose it that way!

Eugene Ormandy was an old-school Music Director, staying with the Philadelphia Orchestra for nearly all his career. His concerts and recordings were remarkable in their consistency. Music lovers could depend absolutely on their rich, clean sounds. Roger Scott, the principal bass at this period, summed it up: "You don't make mistakes in Philadelphia."
