Sparklehorse - The Black Sessions

Review by Faizan Aslam

The Black Sessions by Sparklehorse is a haunting and introspective album that showcases the band's unique sound and artistic vision. The album is a collection of live recordings from various performances on French radio, and each track captures the raw energy and emotion of Sparklehorse's live shows.

The album opens with "Rainmaker," a brooding and atmospheric track that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Other standout tracks include "Spirit Ditch," a melancholy ballad with haunting vocals and a haunting melody, and "Sad and Beautiful World," a slow-burning track that builds to a powerful crescendo.

Throughout the album, frontman Mark Linkous's distinctive voice and poetic lyrics are front and center, backed by the band's layered instrumentation and experimental soundscapes. The result is an album that is both introspective and expansive, with a sense of darkness and beauty that is uniquely Sparklehorse.

About Sparklehorse

Sparklehorse was an American indie rock band from Richmond, Virginia, led by singer and multi-instrumentalist . Sparklehorse was active from 1995 until Linkous' 2010 death by suicide. Prior to forming Sparklehorse, Linkous fronted local bands Johnson Family and Salt Chunk Mary. Only one song, "Someday I Will Treat You Good," survived from these earlier bands to be played by Sparklehorse. Linkous stated that he ultimately chose Sparklehorse for a name because the two words sounded good together and it could loosely be used as a metaphor for a motorcycle.
