Luvd her in the 60's. Came to DC (Milt Grant) and to Baltimore (Buddy Deane). She had a cute honky tonk record also. Any one recall that cute ditty, "Dance with the Dolly/Light of the Moon." (?) This was Damita's followup to Save the Last Dance, etc. Even played this one on American Bandstand. Anyone? Good up tempo dance record. I am NOT imagining this, guys and dolls. Come on. Anyone? Look it up. Honest. Thanks, Damita Jo and Rod McKuen.
the perfect voice for this beautiful song, wow -this type of voice is not too common, beautiful tonality that's extremely defined, I mean there are tons of 'spot on' vocalists however to set yourself apart you had to have God given 'tonality' and this woman reeks of it...if I had a time machine I think I'd go back and recruit her, Marilyn Mcoo and Shirly Bassey for a female answer to 3 Dog Night
You
Great singer, my favourite is I’ll save the last dance for me, I think it’s superb.
This beautiful song (Jaques Brel. English lyrics by Rod Mc Kuen) has been covered by so many singers from F. S. to Neil Diamond who did a great job with it. However, this is DAMITA JO's song. She owns it. Nobody does it like her. She deserves much more credit than she gets. She was a good, good singer.
Should be for hou

I ran her lights at Basin Street East in New York City around 1965. Good memories.
Wow! What a talent. My mother loved Damita Jo. I remember her singing throughout my high school years. It is amazing how much Damita Joe resembles Shirley Bassey, also.

One of the only versions where the singer doesn't gag us with false drama. I like Damita Jo's version very much.

Love this song !!!
It wasn't her biggest hit .. only a minor hit at No 62 on the Us Bill Hot 100 .. ""I'll be there" the answer song to "Stand by me" was her biggest at No 12..
like most great songs this has been done by many great singers. jacque breed's version is recorded live where he literally melts doing it. sinatra was deep into the song too. then there is shirley bass's version. all great.
The answer songs came almost a decade after she began recording. In the early 50's she covered the Patti Page release "I Went to Your Wedding." Her Wikipedia entry will give you details..she was the featured vocalist with Steve Gibson and the Red Caps.
