The Barber of Seville, an opera buffa by Gioachino Rossini, is a classic that has been performed countless times across the world. This particular recording of the opera, featuring the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of Erich Leinsdorf, is a standout rendition that captures the lively spirit of the work.

The overture, with its famous crescendo, is a perfect introduction to the album. The orchestra's sprightly playing sets the tone for the rest of the recording. The chorus is equally impressive, providing a strong backbone to the ensemble numbers.

The soloists are all excellent, with standout performances from Robert Merrill as Figaro and Roberta Peters as Rosina. Merrill's Figaro is charismatic and full of energy, while Peters' Rosina is both playful and soulful. Cesare Valletti as Count Almaviva is also notable, with a clear and powerful tenor voice.

Leinsdorf's direction is masterful, keeping the pacing brisk and the energy high throughout. The orchestra and chorus are perfectly balanced, with neither overpowering the other.
