Robin Kenyatta - Last Tango In Paris

Review by Angela Ban

Last Tango in Paris, the 1973 album by American saxophonist Robin Kenyatta, is a masterpiece of avant-garde jazz. The album features Kenyatta's distinctive, soulful saxophone playing, backed by a talented group of musicians including guitarist Carlos Santana and drummer Billy Cobham.

The album's title track, "Last Tango in Paris," is a hauntingly beautiful piece that showcases Kenyatta's skill as both a composer and a performer. The song features a slow, melancholic melody that builds to a powerful climax, with Kenyatta's saxophone soaring above the rest of the band.

Other standout tracks on the album include "Gypsy Man," a funky, upbeat number that features Santana's trademark guitar playing, and "Terra Nova," a moody, atmospheric piece that showcases Kenyatta's ability to create complex, multi-layered compositions.

Atlantic Records was hotter than hell between 1971-1973, releasing million-selling singles and albums left and right; Atlantic, along with Blue Note and Verve, had found the hit formula of promoting jazz artists on R & B radio with album tracks edited to singles that were cool enough for R & B airplay, thereby garnering a different, younger audience. "Werewolf" was the B-side of Robin Kenyatta's magnificent R & B single, "Last Tango in Paris" from the 2nd pressing of the legendary Gypsy Man lp..

*Wow! I thought this song was great to begin with Gato..then got even better with Herb Albert & Frank Pourcel. THEN, Kenyatta adds in American Funk while respecting the beauty of the orchestral components. This is a rare instance of where a subsequent version builds on its presecessors.

Beautiful.
