Review by ROSITSA GENKOVA

Paddy Roberts' album Strictly For Grown Ups is a charming and witty collection of songs that showcases the British singer-songwriter's talent for clever lyrics and catchy melodies. The album, which was originally released in 1961, features Roberts' signature blend of humor and social commentary, with songs that poke fun at everything from politics to relationships.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "The Ballad of Bethnal Green", which tells the story of a young woman who moves to the city and falls in love with a man who turns out to be a thief. Roberts' clever wordplay and catchy tune make the song both entertaining and thought-provoking, highlighting the struggles of working-class life in mid-century Britain.

Another highlight of the album is "The Big Dee-Jay", a satire of the emerging rock and roll scene of the time. Roberts' witty lyrics and playful vocal delivery make the song a joy to listen to, even as it pokes fun at the excesses of the music industry.

I had this as a child - in the early 1960s. This is the first time I have heard it since then. I found the lyrics first, and thus the real name. Only partly remembered - but loved for the last 55 or so years. Thanks for posting !

I believe he was a friend of fellow South Africans Herbert Kretzmer & Dave Lee who wrote several comedy hits inc Goodness Gracious Me, Banger & Mash , Kinky Boots etc, Herbert went on to write the lyrics for Les Miserables or as I call them 'The Glums'

Paddy Roberts was a former BOAC airline pilot, ... so was Norman Tebbit!

Both served in the RAF to defend our freedom.

Just another comment to add the B side tracks. 1.Ballad of Bethnal Green. 2.Love in a mist.3.A short song.4.Growing old. 5.I've got the Blues. 6.Lavender Cowboy (????). and...7. Poor Little Country Girl. If I knew how to get a few of these up on YouTube I'd have a go. Of course these were very innocent compared to some of todays lyricks. Regards Bernard
