Miyoshi Takemitsu Mayuzumi - New Music From Japan

cybind

Review by Andrew Kovalenko

New Music From Japan is a stunning album featuring the works of two of Japan's most celebrated composers, Miyoshi and Takemitsu Mayuzumi. The album showcases the unique blend of traditional Japanese music and contemporary Western classical music that these two composers are known for.

The album opens with Miyoshi's "Wave Mechanics," a complex and mesmerizing piece that explores the interplay between sound and silence. The piece features a range of instruments, including strings, woodwinds, and percussion, and is characterized by its intricate rhythms and haunting melodies.

Mayuzumi's "Nirvana Symphony" is another standout track on the album. This piece is inspired by the Buddhist concept of Nirvana and features a range of traditional Japanese instruments, including the shakuhachi, koto, and taiko drums. The result is a rich and evocative composition that transports the listener to a different world.

As powerfully visionary as a symphony could be, surely!

I first heard it on the radio in the late 1980s, and was so glad eventually to find it on CD and now on YT. I find it incredibly inspiring - as though showing me the fullness and power of my own being. I've now linked to this from my educational essay 'Musical Influences on Philip Goddard's Music & Literary Works', https://www.philipgoddard-music.co.uk/musical-influences-philip-goddard.htm .

Terrific little piece. He has a strong musical personality. I find it interesting how little Japanese classical music I actually know after having been in the music business for 60 years. Hey, I learn something every day!

Is this the complete piece or only the First Movement? According to the notes above, it appears to be only the First Movement.

I hate to make film music comparisons but some this work was used as 'temp track' music by Ridley Scott in the 1st Alien film. Jerry Goldsmith somewhat begrudgingly copied the orchestrations here. Nevertheless, this is great music and thanks for posting it! I had this piece on an old Odyssey vinyl back in the 70's.
