Miles Davis - In Person Friday Night At The Blackhawk San Francisco Volume I

Review by Phil Ammann

In Person Friday Night At The Blackhawk San Francisco Volume I by Miles Davis is a masterpiece that showcases the jazz legend's unmatched talent and artistry. The album, recorded live at the Blackhawk nightclub in San Francisco in 1961, captures Davis at the peak of his powers, leading his quintet through a series of mesmerizing performances.

The album opens with "Walkin'," a classic Davis composition that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Davis' trumpet playing is impeccable, and his bandmates - saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb - are equally impressive. The chemistry between the musicians is evident, and they play off each other with effortless grace.

The album's standout track is "So What," which showcases Davis' ability to create a mood with just a few notes. The song's haunting melody is both melancholic and uplifting, and Davis' trumpet solo is a thing of beauty. The other tracks on the album - including "All of You," "Bye Bye Blackbird," and "No Blues" - are equally impressive, and each one highlights a different aspect of Davis' musical genius.

8:05 Piano is seriously down in the mix but if you like ride cymbal, plenty to munch on! Though I love Wynton Kelly, it's sort of an aural relief to go to the "Relaxin" version at 4;23 for Red's solo to hear the difference.

IF I WERE A BELL has been much to the liking of two of Miles Davis's piano players, Red Garland and here Wynton Kelly. Garland has an unforgettable solo on the Prestige album, RELAXIN', one of four albums preserving much of the book of that great mid-Fifties quintet with Coltrane, Philly Joe Jones and Paul Chambers. By the time of the BLACKHAWK album, Miles and Kelly had wrung out many musical implications of BELL and they play it up tempo with great mastery and with the very essence of hip.

This is one of my favorite albums in Miles Davis. Especially, this tune which was named "If I were a bell " is so marvelous. The improvisations of Miles trumpet is constantly brilliant. Though the performances of Hank Mobley is less characteristic comparing with John Coltrane, I'm fond of it. Well, I hope that you listen carefully to the piano that was played by Wynton Kelly. It's just blues piano itself. Won't you notice that his long melody line of piano is extraordinarily thrilling ?
Anyway, at the Blackhawk in San Francisco, so wonderfully, they had played the typical jazz number which is titled "If I were a bell".

Miles is at the top of his form during this time of his career. His dexterity has never been this good. My opinion. But it's surely good to hear. His playing had always been muddled to me, but the clarity on this LP is pure.

マイルスの期待に沿えなかったかもしれないが、このモブレーのプレイの素晴らしさは疑う余地はない。モブレーのソロが始まった途端にバンドの一体感が強固になりギアが一段上がる。

it's a shame that this period of Miles' career is overlooked, because this band is great! Hank Mobley wasn't chasin' like Coltrane or proficient like Shorter is, but he was a damned fine tenor player... Mr. PC and Jimmy Cobb (RIP) were as good a rhythm section as any.... and damn! Wynton Kelly's solo at 8:20 cooks and is TASTY!!
