Golly! I fell in love with this take on a low-quality LP reissue from the sixties. The quality of this copy is just beyond belief.

NO recording has ever done full justice to Pops's trumpet. I was privileged to have heard him in live performance seven times from November of '55 to August of '64, and the power and majesty of that sound--like Pavarotti's tenor you could always identify it after two notes--so filled with overtones, never abated. The closest anyone came to capturing its entirety was George Avakian in the W.C. Handy album, with the "Ambassador Satch" album in 2nd place. Neither Decca nor Verve nor Kapp ever came close. Nick Dellow has done a wonderful job here with a relatively early recording, but overtones never captured initially cannot really be restored.
