Liturgy - HAQQ

Review by Rees Prakasa

Liturgy's latest album, HAQQ, is a bold exploration of the boundaries between black metal and experimental music. The album's intricate instrumentation and unconventional song structures showcase the band's innovative approach to genre-bending.

From the opening track, "HAQQ al-Yaqin," the listener is drawn into a world of dissonant guitar riffs, frenzied drumming, and haunting chants. The album's standout moments include the frenetic "Pasaqalia," which features a blistering guitar solo, and the atmospheric "God of Love," which builds to a cathartic climax.

Frontman Hunter Hunt-Hendrix's vocals are a highlight throughout the album, ranging from guttural growls to soaring falsetto. His lyrics explore themes of spirituality, transcendence, and the search for meaning in a chaotic world.

About Liturgy

Liturgy is an American "transcendental black metal" band from Brooklyn, New York, founded in 2008. Originally the solo project of , Liturgy expanded to a four-piece group after the release of a debut 12-inch Immortal Life. Following their first full-length album, Renihilation, on , the group signed a contract with and released their second album, Aesthethica, in May 2011 (featured in the 's "50 Best Albums of 2011" list). Greg Fox and Tyler Dusenbury left the band around 2012, so Hunt-Hendrix and Gann proceeded as a duo for a while, until all members reunited to record the third studio album The Ark Work. Summary by Rees Prakasa

While HAQQ may not be for everyone, its bold experimentation and boundary-pushing approach make it a standout release in the world of metal and experimental music. Liturgy has once again proven themselves to be a band unafraid to take risks and push the limits of their genre.

Finally shaking off the ambitions of revolutionizing a scene which was fake since its inception, Hunt-Hendrix delved even deeper to abstract themes: with his degree in theology/philosophy, he launched a concept about an imaginary realm with self-referential divinities and ideals of perfection put into words through Liturgy's usual extremely shrilling post-Burzum blast-beating and synth/chorus orchestral arrangements. Opener "HAJJ" fully displays the mastodon sonorities, adding even more glitch stutters and acute Metalcore-like breakdowns. "God of Love" follows more ecstatic harmonies, but the title track is based over a Drop D-tuned breakdown with messed up keyboard/guitar/drum arrangements not unlike The Dillinger Escape Plan.Though it doesn't sound anymore as distinctive as the previous years and was essentially reduced to a solo project, Liturgy released still a valid, probably less extreme album, which was still marred by too many interludes and too much studio experimentation. The final shock came the following year, when Hunt-Hendrix announced a change of gender which was kept secret for decades, done probably in the wake of Mina Caputo's example.Highlights: "HAJJ".

I'd normally make a joke about how the title is "literally me," but this music is just so damn good it would feel like a waste of oxygen to do so. Beautiful work.

I just discovered this track. I'm in a pretty dark place spiritually and emotionally right now, and it's helped me by encapsulating those emotions.

Feelings of what remains of my inner innocence being obliterated by the overwhelming darkness that has consumed humanity. Being a witness to the inevitable self-destruction. Scarred by the twisted cruelty of reality and desperately reaching into the black in search of comfort. Jesus, what a nightmare this reality is

digital-glitch black metal ? well a very promising mix that is delivered with great skill and not just to shock the listeners ! the whole album is a mad trip of odd extreme innovative metal
i dont get why people say this is black metal. black metal is just noise and nonesense screaming. this is way more boring

The wind bounces off the windows in desperate attempt to forget the fatal lies of marks made by the un-clean, we all attempt the same in desperate adoration of statuesque slime. The clinging layers of tough sadism wretch cowling blasphemy onto the believers in spite, but grace the cheek of heroes all the same. There is a sorrow in that challenge, there is a follower all the same. Death is the low fruit of weak young, seeking a palpable dogma, now there is branches that whip the untouched into the calm.
Abandon the remorse, adopt the true.
Hollow you're grave, and seek the unknown.
