Review by Georgia McCabe

Symfonietta Taras Bulba is an orchestral masterpiece by Leoš Janáček, performed by the Česká Filharmonie and conducted by Zdeněk Košler. The album features three symphonic poems that capture the essence of the Cossack legend of Taras Bulba.

The first poem, "The Death of Andri," is a hauntingly beautiful piece that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The second poem, "The Death of Ostap," is a dynamic and powerful piece that showcases the orchestra's technical prowess. The final poem, "The Prophecy and Death of Taras Bulba," is a dramatic and emotional conclusion to the album.

The Česká Filharmonie's performance is outstanding, with each musician playing their part to perfection. Zdeněk Košler's direction is masterful, bringing out the nuances and subtleties of Janáček's compositions.

About Leoš Janáček Česká Filharmonie, Zdeněk Košler

Czech composer, musical theorist, folklorist, music writer and teacher. Born July 3, 1854 in Hukvaldy, Moravia (former Austrian Empire), died August 12, 1928 in Ostrava (former Czechoslovakia). He was inspired by Moravian and all Slavic folk music to create an original, modern musical style. Until 1895 he devoted himself mainly to folkloristic research and his early musical output was influenced by contemporaries such as Antonín Dvořák. His later, mature works incorporate his earlier studies of national folk music in a modern, original synthesis. Janáčeks later works include the symphonic poem Sinfonietta, the oratorial Glagolitic Mass, the rhapsody Taras Bulba, string quartets, other chamber works and many original operas.
