JT Money - Pimpin On Wax

Review by Stephen Jones

JT Money's 1999 album Pimpin On Wax is a classic in the southern hip-hop genre. With his raw and unapologetic lyrics, JT Money established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the rap game. The album features standout tracks like "Who Dat," "Playa Ass Shit," and "Hi-Lo," all of which showcase JT Money's signature style of rapping about street life and the pimp lifestyle.

The beats on Pimpin On Wax are equally impressive, with production from some of the biggest names in southern hip-hop, including Mannie Fresh and The Neptunes. The album's overall sound is gritty and unpolished, but that only adds to its charm and authenticity.

JT Money's flow is unmatched on this album, and his ability to paint vivid pictures with his words is impressive. He tells stories of life on the streets, the struggles of being a pimp, and the allure of the fast life. The album is not for the faint of heart, as it contains explicit language and graphic themes, but for fans of hardcore southern hip-hop, Pimpin On Wax is a must-listen.

Comments

This 'professional' AllMusic Review in the 'Overview' section should be completely invalidated on the grounds that the author, Stephen Thomas Erlewine, has incorrectly classified this as "hardcore California rap". In fact, the phrase "...keeps to hardcore California rap..." is even more puzzling. This is simply on account of the fact that JT Money is a product of Miami, Florida and at this point in his career - HAD ONLY EVER BEEN. The only thing 'California' about this work stems from the massive influence that saturated rap as a whole when the prevalence of West Coast styles became dominant and thus reshaped the face of the mainstream. This and the brief one track inclusion of Too $hort as a feature.Anybody who knows anything about JT Money knows that he certainly did not have to 'learn his pimp style' from Too $hort as JT has fixated specifically on these topics - pimps, and ho's, and dirty south sexually explicit humor for the entire length of his career leading up to this. JT Money, is from JT Money and The Poison Clan. Anybody who's listened to the Poison Clan material knows that the entire group is pretty much just JT Money with beats that were produced from the style that was set forth by Luther Campbell of Luke Records, Liberty City, Miami Area, Florida. When it's not just him, JT is the sole redeeming part of this group, The Poison Clan, which he carried on his back when it came to MC ing. Thus, this is a 'debut album' in name only. The title of the 'hit track,' even, is "Who Dat?". Everyone knows that this is a phrase of Southern origin, specifically of the New Orleans area. How the author reads the track titles and then concludes that this is 'hardcore California rap' is beyond ignorant. That being said, I'm not going to say that this is a fantastic rap album by any standard. I'm simply saying that for it to be properly evaluated it first needs to be understood for what it actually is and not confused for something that it is not.Not every regional style is everyone's favorite. However, not every style of rap NEEDS to be compared to completely other styles in order for it to be appreciated. Southern Rap, for example, is not even trying to aspire to that heady New York style. It just doesn't want to even be that. Therefore any comparisons of this to that style, or any other, should be invalidated on account that you lack the proper qualifications to review rap music. Finally, speaking of this album, if you liked The Poison Clan AKA JT Money and The Poison Clan, this album is worth your time on the grounds that there is enough of that classic JT humor. For example, if you liked "Put Shit Pass No Ho" and "I Hate Hoes" (everyone should be raising their hands right now because this shit is hilarious). "Ho Problems" is a follow up in the lineage of this stock JT theme that I hope will never die. This album is the first truly polished sound from JT, with mainstream leanings. So, no, it's not 'hardcore' at all.

Ole JT money that rapper was ballin at the time.I remember there was a car show in Dallas JT pulled up in luxury. There was another from Dallas named Pimpsta but I think his records only played in the south while JT Money went nationwide with his album.JT was probably signed to a major label while Pimpsta was with a major label called A & R record but left label and went independent because I heard they were screwing him over on his money.Anyways JT Money killed that show while Pimpsta killed the second act.

Such a great song! When I adopted my beloved cat, who now resides in Heaven, I loved JT Money so much I named the cat J.T. Bunny?. There is like a circular type sound in the background chorus and the synth that is hypnotic.
