Jean LucPonty With Kurt Edelhagen - Untitled

Review by Arjan Brogt

Jean Luc Ponty's album "Untitled" featuring Kurt Edelhagen is a masterpiece of jazz fusion. The album is a perfect blend of Ponty's virtuoso violin playing and Edelhagen's masterful arrangements. The album features a wide range of styles, from the upbeat and energetic "New Country" to the more contemplative "Far from the Beaten Paths".

The musicianship on this album is exceptional, with Ponty's violin taking center stage but always perfectly complemented by the other instruments. The album is a true showcase of Ponty's talent as a composer and performer, as well as Edelhagen's skill as an arranger.

Notes

  • Note: Jean-Luc Ponty was not playing with Kurt Edelhagen in 1959. From the electronic effects used on this recording, it is likely to be from circa 1966 to 1968. He told me Ken Dryden in a 2002 personal interview that he was not on the last three tracks, nor does it sound like his playing. There is also an awkward splice in track one that appears on all subsequent reissues of this unofficial release.
  • IMPORTANT!: despite the liner notes, please take note that only side one features the violinist with Edelhagen's big band! The three other tracks do NOT feature Jean-Luc Ponty at all but Stéphane Grappelli instead, totally uncredited and from an obscure source! This information were confirmed to me by phone by J.L. Ponty's management.
