Serving up prime cuts from his last 4 albums, Jean-Luc Ponty's Live album is a great retrospective of his classic era filled with advanced fusion instrumentals. Standout non-album track No Strings Attached is a violin showcase with plenty of effects and classic Ponty-isms to bring the crowd to roaring applause. Ponty's playing is remarkable and melodic throughout, and his backing band are nuanced and responsive. Like any Ponty LP great playing abounds, but the true star of this release are the compositions themselves, which sound even more organic and natural live then they did on previous studio releases. A must-have for any fan of his early electric solo work, also highly recommended for the newly-initiated Ponty fan or any fan of 70's fusion.
my concert ticket from Berlin, 1978 matches this record date - I was there!
This cat was way ahead of the game on a whole other level. This music changed my life at 15yr old I knew I would play music, I did. Thanks for the beautiful music
What a master piece ! Still listening from the “live” album 2020. Ponty is genius.
bass on this live version is from another galaxy, i think i was at this show, really do, astounding.
Great Drums.

Sick Ralphe.
This is really aggressive for Jean-Luc Ponty and it's wonderful. Saw him in Boulder a few months ago. Amazing and hat's off to Jamie Glaser
One comment describes seeing them as a "Super Nova".
That is precisely right. In the 70's I never missed seeing them in San Diego. The first time at SDSU's Montezuma Hall, sitting on folding chairs so close it was like being on stage with them. Ralph's playing a fretless bass; the drummer was a ballistic missile driving right at you; the guitarist and Jean-Luc trading "leads". Jean-Luc could play the electric violin like a guitar, or banjo, or synthesizer...or even a violin! When he picked up the gloss black one(he had four, each a different color), that one had the POWER cranked up to match any artist ever! It was stunning to see!
Imaginary Voyage is one of the greatest albums of all time.

The entire song by song studio album is one of the greatest albums of all time, any genre, any era, any artist.
Everything JLP has ever done is fabulous, but IMAGINARY VOYAGE can't be topped! Saw them live every time they hit San Diego in the 70's & 80's. WOW! The experience would stick in your soul for weeks...and the rest of your life as well!

Let me add that the one and only Mark Craney was on the original studio recording. An extraordinary drummer who lent
his talent to Gino Vanelli's Brother to Brother in 1977 and still sounds remarkable today. After hearing that i dubbed Mark the Human Octopus.....seemed like he had 8 appendages.

I'd like to know who on ? would give this a thumbs down, did they think Ponty was a rapper or what ?
saw him yesterday at saratoga jazz fest was great except he over looked this song'
If I was ever stranded on a deserted island and could only listen to one artist, it would be Ponty! n
There's some misunderstanding here as to what recording it is, and who's on it. The is from the album, Jean-Luc Ponty "Live
JLP always has such wonderful drummers to accompany him and this guy is no exception
Man, Jean Luc would saw on that violin.....and Ralphe....beyond sublime.
Siobhan...Tom Fowler was over the top! Wish I could play my bass half as well! I hope you are well fellow fusion lover!
MARHILL77 this is actually the live recording Lp with Jamie and Joaquin from December 1978 !
Oh, and I saw Ponty live many years ago in Morristown NJ. Ralphe stole the show. Standing there calmly like a brick on stage with his Gibson putting down the most monstrous and tasty right on time bass ever heard!
Ralphe. The man is my personal bass inspiration. He and Grover Washington Jr. started me playing. I've been trying to sound like Ralphe for 30 years. I can nail his riffs, but when he starts soloing...I just can't get even close. Bass genius. Word. Oh, and serious Ponty fans will do well to remember Tim Fowler who played bass in the early years. He kicked some wicked bass ass himself.
The bass and drum is overwhelming, but the violin gets annoying after a minute or so. That's the problem with JLP :(
Corea Kixx,
Those were the days! Great Jazz and fusion everywhere you turned! I'm musically out of touch these days. Is there anything worth listening to out there? I'd like your suggestions. Anything music I listen to must have great bass. No synth bass.

He is terrific. I remember first hearing him and Michael Walden on the Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Apocalypse" release. I also really like his playing on "Visions of the Emerald Beyond". A wonderful player.
If most bass players haven't heard of Ralphe Armstrong, that's their loss.
Porra...Ele toca violino como quem toca guitarra.Jean é o meu violinista predileto e esses duelos com guitarra matam a pau.
