Review by Amanda Sondel

The album Flute Sonatas by J S Bach, featuring Petri Alanko, Anssi Mattila, Jukka Rautasalo, and Hanna Juutilainen, is a beautiful and masterful collection of music. The performers bring a depth of emotion and technical skill to each piece, highlighting the intricate melodies and harmonies of Bach's compositions.

The album opens with the Sonata in E-flat Major, BWV 1031, featuring Alanko on the flute and Mattila on the harpsichord. The two musicians work together seamlessly, creating a rich and dynamic performance that captures the essence of Bach's music.

Rautasalo takes the lead on the Sonata in G Minor, BWV 1020, accompanied by Mattila on the harpsichord. Rautasalo's flute playing is delicate and precise, while Mattila's accompaniment is beautifully nuanced, creating a sense of depth and complexity in the music.

Juutilainen joins the group for the Sonata in A Major, BWV 1032, adding her own unique voice to the mix. Her flute playing is bold and expressive, perfectly complementing the other performers and bringing a new dimension to the music.

About J S Bach Petri Alanko , Anssi Mattila, Jukka Rautasalo, Hanna Juutilainen

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .
