Review by Justin Martin

Tryout, the collaborative album by Ira Gershwin and Kurt Weill, is a masterpiece of musical storytelling. The album features a range of songs that showcase the talents of both artists, from the whimsical “Tchaikovsky (and Other Russians)” to the haunting “Lost in the Stars.”

The album opens with “The Saga of Jenny,” a playful tune that tells the story of a woman who travels the world in search of love. Gershwin’s lyrics are witty and clever, while Weill’s music is catchy and upbeat. The song sets the tone for the rest of the album, which is full of clever wordplay and memorable melodies.

“Tchaikovsky (and Other Russians)” is a standout track, with Gershwin’s lyrics poking fun at the Russian composers that were popular at the time. Weill’s music is playful and lively, making this song a joy to listen to.

“Lost in the Stars” is a stark contrast to the rest of the album, with its melancholy melody and haunting lyrics. Gershwin’s words are powerful and moving, while Weill’s music is hauntingly beautiful. This song is a true masterpiece, showcasing the depth and range of both artists.
