The Icicle Works - The Icicle Works

danwwagoner

Review by Daniel Wagoner

The Icicle Works' self-titled album is a true gem of the 80s post-punk and new wave scene. Released in 1984, the album features 10 tracks that showcase the band's unique blend of jangly guitars, atmospheric synths, and emotionally charged lyrics.

The album's opening track, "Chop the Tree", sets the tone with its urgent drumbeat and soaring guitar riffs. The catchy chorus and Ian McNabb's distinctive vocals make it an instant classic. Other standout tracks include "Love Is a Wonderful Colour", a dreamy ballad that highlights McNabb's songwriting skills, and "In the Cauldron of Love", a moody track that builds to an epic crescendo.

The album's production is top-notch, with producer Hugh Jones capturing the band's live energy while adding layers of atmospheric soundscapes. The Icicle Works' musicianship is also on full display, with Chris Sharrock's dynamic drumming and McNabb's intricate guitar work.

It was indeed at the Soap Aid aftershow party when McNabb got beaten up by the bouncers, just a quick use of google will point you in the direction of 3 or 4 different newspaper articles regarding it!!

I saw these guys in Berkeley, California. in a very small club. Absolutely fantastic band! Those really were the good old days ... If they were from the British Isles and had a weird name, I went to see them. Never got proven wrong ....

I lived in Liverpool in the early-mid eighties and I just assumed that music would carry on evolving and improving and that there was nothing that special about the bands I was watching and listening to- WRONG!

Oh man. That's a treasure. What I would do to have witnessed those incredibly talented and original early 80's English Bands. What an exciting time. Thanks for posting. ~G
