Herbie Hancock - Herbie Hancock

Review by MNR AQ

Herbie Hancock's self-titled album "Herbie Hancock" is a masterpiece of jazz fusion. Released in 1971, the album showcases Hancock's incredible talent as a pianist, composer, and bandleader. The album features a stellar lineup of musicians, including saxophonist Wayne Shorter, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams.

The album opens with the track "Chameleon," which is now considered a classic in the jazz-funk genre. The track features a catchy bassline, funky horn section, and a memorable keyboard riff. The album also features the beautiful ballad "Butterfly" and the energetic "Vein Melter."

One of the most impressive things about this album is how well it has aged. The music still sounds fresh and innovative, even after nearly 50 years. Hancock's use of synthesizers and electronic instruments was groundbreaking at the time, and it still sounds ahead of its time today.

  • This release with typeset variations on labels is similar/identical to Herbie Hancock (which seems to be a Terre Haute pressing based on the runouts).
  • The label layout is slightly different compared to Herbie Hancock, in particular wrt used fonts and sizes of text elements..
  • Gatefold sleeve.
  • This release with typeset variations on labels, the placement of printed information on labels in relation to the pressed inner circle varies from another same catalog # release "Herbie Hancock".
  • Big mistake on that version:
  • The LP "side 2 - 3" is mixed with the Chick Corea's release BNLA 395-H2 on side 2
  • Major Keys is a brand-new audiophile label focusing on fully licensed reissues of jazz classics, pressed on 12' for a fuller, louder version compared to the original album cut. What better way to kick of the series than housing Herbie Hancock's imitable 'Chameleon' and 'Watermelon Man', loud and proud on either side of a 12'. They don't get much more iconic than 'Chameleon'. Nestled on the incredible 1973 'Head Hunters' album it's a 16-minute exploration of legendary jazz funk - having all the sensibilities and solos of a jazz record, yet grounding it's rhythms in funk, soul and R&B. Even, as it's title suggests, morphing from a low slung slow jam into a full-on, fast paced spiritual gem. Lock in for one of the most iconic basslines around courtesy of Paul Jackson, alongside some of the sweetest synth and Rhodes playing you're likely to hear from Herbie, all tied together with Harvey Mason's mythical drumming. Sampled the world over by the biggest and the best this is a truly timeless and hugely influential piece of music. On the B side, the equally intriguing 'Watermelon Man'. This version, again taken from the Head Hunters LP, differs from the Blue Note bop '62 original, with Hancock developing it into a jazz fusion expedition. Bill Summers top and tails the track with a style of beer bottle blowing imitating a type of whistle playing found in Central African Pygmy music, giving a unique flavour to Hancock's jazz funk stylings that focus on the rhythmic interplay between each instrument. From Dilla to Digable Planets, Madonna to Massive Attack it's a classic that's sampled time and time again for good reason.

I found this very album in the dollar bin at a used record store in Boston around 1975. Took a shot and bought it and I loved it. My brother also really dug this album. If you have the album, please post the other tunes!

Sick drive of the drums & piano on this album! Were are the other tracks? This definitely a different mix of the album Out Of This World - Donald Byrd Pepper Adams Quintet. I like this one more!

Jammin' With Herbie (orig. Curro's) was recorded in New York City, on 02 MAR 1961.  This is the Adams-Byrd unit, but reissues credit a ‘Herbie Hancock Quintet’.  Herbie was almost 21 years old; this is his recording debut.
