ELEND - Leçon de Ténèbres

Review by Takahiro Ikeuchi

Elend's album Leçon de Ténèbres is an incredible masterpiece of dark, atmospheric music. The album's hauntingly beautiful melodies and intricate arrangements make it a must-listen for fans of gothic and ambient music.

The album is divided into three parts, each of which explores different themes and emotions. The first part is a slow, mournful meditation on death and loss, while the second part is more intense and aggressive, with driving rhythms and soaring vocals.

The final part of the album is perhaps the most impressive, with Elend showcasing their incredible skill at creating vast, epic soundscapes that are both awe-inspiring and deeply unsettling. The album's use of choirs, orchestras, and other instruments is masterful, creating a dense, layered sound that is both beautiful and terrifying.

About ELEND

Elend's work can best be described as very dark and oppressing symphonic music influenced by Krzysztof Penderecki, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis, Pierre Henry and Peter Eötvös. Their method of structuring pieces of music does not follow any dogmatic rules and their use of arrangements reaches peaks in terms of orchestral density and vocal diversity. They have kept the traditional instrumentation of post-romantic orchestras but taken the limits much further by multiplying the number of instruments in each section and extending it by integrating modern elements such as ambient and industrial sounds and percussion instruments. Their compositions are structured into two trilogies: and . Formed in September 1993: Aeon was Iskandar Hasnawi's atmospheric dark metal band (1992-1993) which evolved into a one-man dark orchestral band before merging into Elend when Renaud Tschirner joined in September 1993. Founded in 1993 by composers and multi-instrumentalists Iskandar Hasnawi and Renaud Tschirner, joined by keyboard player, programmer and engineer Sébastien Roland in 1997, Elend have released two trilogies of albums so far, the "Officium Tenebrarum" (1994-1998) and the "Winds Cycle" (2003-2007). After a hiatus of 13 years, Elend resumed their work in 2019.

French band Elend make Gothic Rock-related Ambient soundscapes with the use of violins, various synth sounds (harp, oboe and other classical instruments) and simple, droning melodies with lyrical male/female vocals. Their 1994 debut, Lecons de Tenebres, is the first part based over the Officium Tenebrarum, a series of masses in Latin, and features occasional post-Burzum shouts, like during the sentences recited by Lucifer. Though the album's whiny mood may be irritating, some tracks are quite beautiful, like the string-laden closer.Highlights: "Chanting", "The Emperor".
