Dominic Behan - Wormwood Scrubs

Review by Marcyo Oliveira

Wormwood Scrubs, the 1965 album by Irish singer-songwriter Dominic Behan, is a powerful and poignant collection of folk songs that capture the struggles and sorrows of the working-class people.

Behan's rich and soulful voice is perfectly suited to the raw and emotional nature of the songs, which deal with themes of poverty, injustice, and political oppression. His lyrics are sharp and insightful, painting vivid pictures of the harsh realities faced by many in post-war Britain.

The album's title track, "Wormwood Scrubs," is a haunting ballad about the infamous London prison, while "The Patriot Game" is a stirring tribute to the Irish Republican Army. Other standout tracks include "The Recruiting Sergeant," a biting critique of war and militarism, and "The Zoological Gardens," a playful and humorous song about the animals in a zoo.

Oh. Most of them couldn't care less these these days - at least in GB itself. They wouldn't know what he was singing about.

I hope my neighbour doesnt start his car.
It would be fun if the Irish rebel song "The Rifles Of The IRA" was sung by an Irish singer on the talent show "Britain's Got Talent". But one need a courageous singer!

This  song is just so typical of Irish nationalism  both claiming victimhood and boasting at the same time .    But unlike others it is a tuneless  dirge

A Black and Tan was a 'soldier' from a mismatched British regiment sent over from Britain to support the pro-crown RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) who were Britain's unwelcomed police force in Ireland. You would drink a pint of the 'black stuff' (Guinness) but you certainly wouldn't drink a Black and Tan... Shoot one maybe!

Whoa. Now I have an overwhelming urge to join the IRA for some reason. And to drink a black and tan.
