Claudio Monteverdi - Orfeo

Review by Rafael Coelho

Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi is a masterpiece of early Baroque opera. The album, released in 1607, tells the story of Orfeo, a musician who descends into the underworld in search of his beloved Euridice. The music is innovative, featuring a combination of recitative and aria styles that were new to the opera world. The instrumentation is also impressive, with the use of brass, strings, and woodwinds adding depth and intensity to the performances.

The vocal performances on Orfeo are exceptional. The lead role of Orfeo is sung by a tenor, and his emotional range is on full display throughout the album. The supporting cast of singers is also impressive, with each performer bringing a unique voice and style to their roles.

The album's standout moments include the opening sinfonia, which sets the stage for the story to come, and the famous aria "Possente spirto," which Orfeo sings to the god of the underworld in an attempt to win back his love. The final chorus, which celebrates the power of music to move even the gods, is a fitting end to this epic opera.
