Big Country - Steeltown Ciudad De Acero

Review by Erin Naumowicz

Steeltown Ciudad De Acero, the sixth studio album by Scottish rock band Big Country, is a powerful and emotional tribute to the working-class communities that built the band's sound and ethos. Released in 1984, just one year after their breakthrough debut album The Crossing, Steeltown showcases the band's signature blend of Celtic-infused rock, post-punk energy, and socially conscious lyrics.

From the opening track "Flame of the West," with its urgent guitar riffs and soaring vocals, to the closing ballad "The Travellers," with its haunting melodies and poetic lyrics, Steeltown takes the listener on a journey through the struggles and triumphs of industrial towns and their inhabitants. The title track, "Steeltown," is a powerful anthem that captures the pride and resilience of steelworkers and their families, while "East of Eden" and "Where the Rose is Sown" explore the themes of hope and despair, love and loss, that are at the heart of Big Country's music.

Throughout the album, the band's musicianship is exceptional, with Stuart Adamson's distinctive guitar work and vocals, Bruce Watson's intricate guitar textures, Tony Butler's driving bass lines, and Mark Brzezicki's dynamic drumming creating a sound that is both raw and polished, intense and melodic. The production by Steve Lillywhite is also top-notch, capturing the energy and emotion of the band's live performances.

Summary by Erin Naumowicz

Despite its critical and commercial success, Steeltown is often overlooked in the Big Country discography, overshadowed by the band's earlier and later albums. However, for fans of Celtic rock, post-punk, and social commentary, this album is a must-listen, a testament to the power of music to inspire and unite people across borders and generations.

I had this on vinyl when it came out and I think Side A stayed on the turntable for WEEKS.. that is one of the greatest album sides of all time. The whole album is great but wow... And Steeltown has one of the best build-up beginnings ever. By the time the first word is spoken you're drawn in entirely.

Per tweet.."..1st heard 'Steeltown' in the antebellum grunge mid 80's at Two Bells Tavern, BellTown, Seattle. Slamming at night, beer bloom, diy neon, evening tobbaco blue ☁️, w/ Nofsker playing Mehitabel prancing across the countertop and #waltCrowley & typewriter Archie.. a glorious time.

A woefully unappreciated band. World-class musicianship with a talented and charismatic front man. They committed to their sound, perhaps to the detriment of commercial success, but it's all the more reason to love them. For the uninitiated, listen to their entire first album The Crossing. Fucking brilliant.

Awesome song, awesome band. Reminds me of my Comprehensive school days. Big Country, Simple Minds, U2....they were untouchable. Modern bands and music have nothing on these bands. Passion, raw energy and meaningful songs.

Big Country fans are a family. As an American, I'm truly grateful I discovered them. Steeltown is the best unsung album in rock history. Every song is pure poetry and deeply soul-stirring.

Seethe German 90s movie “Stalingrad” about Operation Barbarossa invasion of Russia-this Song epitomizes the heady expectations, and later the inhuman suffering and final defeat of the over confident Third Reich-inspired by the Flame of the West!

I remember
Great song, It just popped up in my mix list. I live in Pittsburgh,pa and I am a 3rd generation union steelworker. Many people where I live can relate to these lyrics. The area has been hit hard the last 30+ years with mills closing. I always thought Big Country was a super underrated band in the US, this song and Restless Natives kick ass.
