About Beethoven Mozart Eugene Ormandy, The Philadelphia Orchestra
German composer and pianist, born in 1770 (baptized 17 December 1770) in Bonn, Germany and died 26 March 1827 in Vienna, Austria.
A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in classical music. Beethoven led Viennese Classicism to its highest development and paved the way for Romantic music.
Beethoven was the eldest son of a singer in the Kapelle of the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne and grandson of the Archbishop's Kapellmeister. He moved in 1792 to Vienna, where he had some lessons from Haydn and others, quickly establishing himself as a remarkable keyboard-player and original composer. By 1815 increasing deafness made public performance impossible and accentuated existing eccentricities of character, patiently tolerated by a series of rich patrons and his royal pupil the Archduke Rudolph.
Beethoven did much to enlarge the possibilities of music and widen the horizons of later generations of composers. To his contemporaries he was sometimes a controversial figure, making heavy demands on listeners both by the length and by the complexity of his writing, as he explored new fields of music.

Comments
What's really coming through is what Beethoven intended. When you listen to the Solti ,Karajan, Bernstein,... they often pervert the interpretation for the sake of putting their own stamp on it. The reason this set has remained a popular favorite is because here is where you come to hear Beethoven. Of course the orchestra is excellent and Ormandy is astonishingly solid in his leadership of an interpretations 'a composer could love!'
Jack Krumm says it beautifully. I too something of a South Philadelphia Thug was extremely fortunate to attend concerts at the Academy of Music for years with the great Eugene Ormandy conducting the incomparable Philadelphia Orchestra.
Here with the justly iconic Beethoven 5th Symphony, we hear darkness of sound at the bottom, color and Oh what balance between all sections of the ensemble.
And chiaroscuro combined with tension and release. As someone correctly commented, the Ormandy legacy is writ large in Philadelphia and throughout the world. And for that we should all be extremely extremely grateful

Is this really Ormandy? I’m inclined to believe this is Muti or any of Ormandy’s successors. I’m sure this has been remastered, but this sounds too good to be Ormandy. Just listen to that wonderful brass!!
Are you sure this is Ormandy? I’m sure this has been remastered, but it sounds too good to be Ormandy. I do hear his characteristic portamento in some places, but the brass in this is way better than most of Ormandy’s interpretations. Maybe this recording is Muti?

I like the strings , how they play the four notes in the begging ❤
This was the recording I had in my collection, so I had no idea that the opening section had a repeat until I heard the piece live in my early 20's!
philadelphia orchestra under ormandy, does not get any better. grew up with 1st balcony center seats at Academy of Music Had no idea at the time what a treasure it was
As a bit of a philly thug in the early 70’s, even I knew something Galactic was happening with “those fantastic Philadelphians.” I attended several times and it touched and lit off something inside me. After much study I achieved much, and now am returned to these holy grounds in my retirement. Long live Ormandy’s legacy and the Academy of Music! I will be seeing you as we celebrate Beethoven’s 250th together.
