Anthony Cox - Dark Metals

Review by Kai Cheng Ong

Dark Metals is the latest album by Anthony Cox, a renowned jazz bassist, and composer. The album is a unique combination of jazz, rock, and electronic music, creating a dark and atmospheric sound that is both haunting and mesmerizing.

The album features eight tracks, each with its own distinct sound and mood. From the opening track, "Black Sun," to the closing track, "The Abyss," Dark Metals takes listeners on a journey through the depths of the human psyche.

Cox's bass playing is exceptional throughout the album, providing a solid foundation for the other instruments to build upon. The use of electronic beats and synthesizers adds a modern edge to the music, while the guitar work of David Gilmore and the saxophone of Ravi Coltrane provide a beautiful contrast to the darker elements of the album.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "The Black Lodge," which features a haunting melody played on the saxophone, backed by a driving electronic beat. The track builds to a powerful climax, with Cox's bass playing taking center stage.

Complimenting Allmusic's very pertinent review of this disk, I feel a few words on the selections of this very varied recording is appropriate. This is no uniform Young Lions affair, quite to the contrary: what we have here is an extremely interesting set of quartet, trio and duo performances. Billy Higgins contributes two pieces where he sings in a pseudo-Brazilian fashion playing guitar. On another track he plays the guembra, in African stringed instrument. Absolutely unique in his discography. Dark Metals is a three-movement suite amounting to some 10 minutes' music time, a duet between Anthony Cox on bass and his pianist Mike Caine. Well worth discovering!
