Comments
Recorded at SUNY Fredonia in 1983, Secrets of the I Ching was the first full length album from 10000 Maniacs and released on their own Christian Burial label. It received significant radio airplay in the Buffalo NY area especially on WBNY, Buffalo State College's pioneering college radio station. The production is good for a local album but even by 1983 standards was not "big label" quality. This gives the album something of a DIY feel to it, more in line with early punk and new wave recordings. The songs were unusual for the time, blending folk, jazz, new wave, and jam rock. Daktari, for example, sounds like a cross between Phish and Talking Heads. This was music that presaged the late 80's and early 90's. Many of the best songs from Secrets of the I Ching, such as Grey Victory, Daktari, and My Mother the War were rerecorded for the 10,0000 Maniacs first big studio album, The Wishing Chair. The latter versions benefit from higher production values while remaining true to the originals. Other songs from the album also can be found on the 1990 rarities album, Hope Chest.Overall, Secrets of the I Ching is interesting for what it signals more than what it is. It is a late 80's/early 90's album in the early 80's. Secrets of the I Ching also shows the formative moments of a band and lead singer, Natalie Merchant, who would become stars. The album itself is rare and not typically on found streaming music services. I'm glad to have bought mine in 1983 at Record Theater in Buffalo.
