Review by Bill Newman

BGM, the fifth studio album by Yellow Magic Orchestra, is a captivating piece of work that showcases the band's unique blend of electronic and traditional Japanese music. Released in 1981, the album features a total of ten tracks, each with its distinct sound and style.

The opening track, "1000 Knives," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its upbeat tempo and catchy melody. It is followed by "Cue," a slower, more introspective track that features haunting vocal samples and a hypnotic synth line.

Other standout tracks on the album include "Camouflage," a funky, bass-heavy track that features a driving beat and catchy hooks, and "Mass," a dreamy, atmospheric piece that incorporates elements of traditional Japanese music.

Japanese electropop band, formed in 1978. The principal members are Haruomi Hosono (bass), Yukihiro Takahashi (drums) and Ryuichi Sakamoto (keyboards). The band was originally conceived as a one-off studio project by Hosono, the other two members being recruited session musicians - the idea was to produce an album fusing orientalist exotica (cf their cover version of Martin Denny's Firecracker) with modern electronics. However the first album (with its cutting-edge production) was very popular, and the studio project grew into a fully fledged touring band and career for its three members. Making abundant use of new synthesizers, samplers, digital and computer recording technology as it became available, their popularity and influence extended beyond Japan. Generally the band are highly regarded as pioneers of electronic music, and continue to be remixed and sampled by modern artists. The band had stopped working together by 1984 (deliberately using a Japanese term meaning "spreading out" or "branching out" rather than saying they were "splitting up"); the three members returning to their solo careers but continuing to collaborate. They released a one-off reunion album, Technodon, in 1993. The early 2000s saw Hosono & Takahashi reunited in a project called Sketch Show. On a number of occasions Ryuichi Sakamoto has joined in on Sketch Show performances and recording sessions. He later proposed they rename the unit "Human Audio Sponge" when he participates, although outside Japan they also used "Yellow Magic Orchestra" until ownership issues with former label Alfa were resolved, so subsequent live releases use the original band name. Summary by Bill Newman

BGM is a masterful album that showcases Yellow Magic Orchestra's innovative approach to music-making. The band's use of electronic instrumentation and traditional Japanese music creates a unique sound that is both futuristic and deeply rooted in tradition. This album is a must-listen for anyone interested in the history of electronic music and the fusion of different musical traditions.

This is along with 'Technodelic' is one of the best early electronic albums of 1980s. These guys were super brave to go as far out and push the boundaries from their earlier work and the pure originality of this record is just surreal. 'Ballet' is a beautifully cold and whimsical opener that conjures up a feeling of a forgotten era with its dark brooding synths. 'Music Plans' is another favourite of mine and distinctly Sakamoto, again the cold synth atmosphere is present and the distorted synth lead really cuts through the mix, bearing in mind other than the TR-808 drum machine (they were the first band to use it by the way) they were using the same equipment from their previous works, so to be able to create a whole new sonic experience with these instruments and limited technology for 1981 is a masterful feat. Other moments that are notable are tacks such as 'Cue' which is the most radio friendly of the album and the reworking of Sakamoto's '1000 Knives' which is extremely percussive and buzzing with loud, bleepy synths. The album also features some more ambient moments such as 'Happy End' and 'Loom' which are both reflective of the ambient workings of Sakamoto at this time with his album 'B-2 Unit'. Overall this is a unique album for the time period and one that would inspire future electronic acts and the world of Techno and Trance music and an album that if you're one for the obscure you'll enjoy it!
