The White Stripes - Under Blackpool Lights

Review by Lloyd Humphreys

Under Blackpool Lights is a live album by the American rock band White Stripes. The album was released in 2004 and features recordings from the band's show at the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool, England. Overall, the album is a solid representation of the band's live sound and energy.

The album opens with "When I Hear My Name," a fast-paced, bluesy track that immediately sets the tone for the rest of the album. The band's signature sound is on full display throughout the album, with Jack White's distorted guitar riffs and Meg White's pounding drums driving each song forward.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself," a cover of the Burt Bacharach song. The White Stripes' version is a raw and emotional take on the classic tune that showcases Jack White's vocals and guitar skills.

Another highlight of the album is "Hotel Yorba," a fan-favorite that always gets the crowd energized. The live version on Under Blackpool Lights is no exception, with the band's performance capturing the excitement and energy of their live shows.

Bluesy garage rock band from Detroit, Michigan (USA). The band comprising the bass-free duo of and . The Whites, once married and divorced in March 2000, formed their lo-fi garage band in 1997. They officially ceased to perform in Feb 2011. Previously the guitarist in garage band , Jack White's musical output in this fused twosome was heavily laced with folk blues, country, 60s Britpop and Broadway show tunes. Dressed in minimalist red and white outfits, the Stripes' striking stage presence was allied to their undeniable grasp of the rudiments of timeless rock music. Meg’s drum playing has a performance to it unlike any other. Yes it may be simple, but it’s almost like she’s seducing Jack with her drumming at the beginning.

Huge White Stripes fan, miss them every day. I was lucky enough to see them on this tour in 2004 at Alexandra Palace and no live music DVD I have watched since better captures the sound and intensity of these gigs. No idea why, but I own two copies! I reckon I watch them at least twice a year. Just intense, amazing, spine-tingling.
