this pre-dates MTV but early MTV videos all looked like this.
from the time young people were watching Toppop and similar hitparades and listening to the radio, hoping to see and hear their heroes. Van McCoy and his recognizable sound: a hit and success on the dance floor. The hustle, the shuffle, African Symphony, and many many more... he died too young !
RIP Van. The World of Music misses those such as you.
Great song and nice of Van McCoy to give a visual marker for the start of that funky break. For all those wondering about the video, well, just remember this was recorded for a Dutch show... Hakken on my crazy Dutch dudes!

What a weird vid
People critical of the "video". In 1975 promotional videos for records were few and far between. Firstly they were expensive to make and second there were few opportunities to view them. There were no 24 hr cable/satellite stations or dedicated music channels on TV. In the UK there was 1 TV show- Top of the Pops- which was broadcast once a week and ran for 30 minutes. The acts were expected to appear on the show to promote their record. Of course a few acts including the Beatles did experiment with making promotional films to accompany recordings for a variety of reasons. By 1974 Swedish group ABBA began to have hits across several markets and began to produce a video for each song they released that could be shown in place of their being unavailable for a live appearance. Although ABBA were the first to do this regularly the Rock music industry prefer to conveniently overlook this fact and they regard the video produced by UK rock band Queen to promote their magnum opus Bohemian Rhapsody as the first artistic music video. Bohemian Rhapsody was indeed a ground breaking record as was the stylish artistic video. The video allowed Queen to promote the studio produced single that used groundbreaking effects that were difficult to replicate live. Initially music videos were simple with the artist standing singing/playing along to their hit. Slowly as the 80s dawned promotional video became an important art form in itself with David Bowie, Duran Duran, Peter Gabriel & Dire Straits making important contributions to the new art form. It would be Michael Jackson who would lead the way with Hollywood sized budgets and production values in experimenting with advanced film techniques, special effects and intricate set piece dance routines. The video for Thriller is regarded as the zenith of Pop music videos. By 1985 it would be difficult to place a record on the charts without a video to help promote the song on MTV. The rest is history. As far as I'm aware this is the only video clip of Van McCoy in action.
I gave him dap 10 times.
