Thelonious Monk Trio - Reflections

Review by Julia Stege

Reflections by Thelonious Monk Trio is a classic jazz album that showcases the brilliant musicianship of Thelonious Monk on piano, Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, and Ben Riley on drums. The album was recorded in 1958 and released by Riverside Records.

The album features nine tracks, including several Monk originals such as "Reflections," "Hornin' In," and "Skippy." The trio's playful and intricate interplay is on full display throughout the album, with Monk's unique chord voicings and angular melodies providing the perfect foundation for Rouse and Riley's dynamic improvisations.

One standout track on the album is "Ruby, My Dear," a beautiful ballad that features Monk's sensitive and lyrical playing. Another highlight is "Off Minor," a fast-paced tune that showcases the trio's virtuosic musicianship.

Monk was brilliant...a Rembrandt or Picasso. Yet I don’t think that he got a fair shake. Don’t think he was formerly trained. Shit, the producer was apparently to cheap to provide him with a piano that was even remotely tuned. Unbelievable.

agree the early records-trios in particular are magical. Thank the deities no-one tuned the piano first- the sound here is stunningly beautiful. I do love theis Blakey trio at least as much as the Roach, - but---it's all eye-wateringly beautiful

Sweet and lovely sweeter than the roses in May
Sweet and lovely heaven must have sent her my way
Skies above me never were as blue as her eyes
And she loves me, who would want a sweeter surprise
When she nestles in my arms so tenderly
There's a thrill that words cannot express
In my heart a song of love is taunting me, melody, haunting me
Sweet and lovely sweeter than the roses in May
And she loves me, there is nothing more I can say
Sweet and lovely sweeter than the roses in May
Sweet and lovely heaven must have sent her my way
Skies above me never were as blue as her eyes
And she loves me, who would want a sweeter surprise
When she nestles in my arms so tenderly
There's a thrill that words cannot express
In my heart a song of love is taunting me, melody, haunting me
Sweet and lovely sweeter than the roses in May
And she loves me, there is nothing more I can say
