About The Supremes & The Four Tops

(1976 to 1977)
Hugely successful female vocal group formed in 1961, after initially after being called from 1959 to 1960. Their best-known and most stable lineup was Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson, in which configuration they became Motown's top act of the 1960s, though of that line-up only Wilson remained in the group by the time of the 1970s disco incarnation represented here.
The Supremes changed name in early 1967 to Diana Ross & The Supremes. Motown president stated that the name change was done so that Motown could demand more money from live bookings, but rumors began to spread of an approaching Diana Ross solo career.
At that time member Florence Ballard had begun drinking and occasionally missing performance and, by June 1967, was replaced by Cindy Birdsong, a member of Patti LaBelle & The Blue Belles.
In January 1970, Diana Ross & The Supremes gave their final performance and Ross began her solo career. Jean Terrell replaced Diana as the lead singer and thereby renaming the group back to The Supremes.
Inducted into Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 (Performer).

Jean Terrell and Levi Stubbs - what a combination! On this track Obie and Lawrence also sing some lead lines, too.
Why would Motown release a Diana Ross version and a Supremes (with Four Tops) version at about the same time?
This is a dynamic, and in my opinion as good as Ross' version. But Diana's charted top 20 and this sunk. And this version was right between two top 20 hits ("River Deep, Mountain High" and "Nathan Jones").

Dang, I haven't heard this song in many, many years by these groups. This sounds so good.... A great song.
Love Diana’s version. Reached #7 on the r&b charts
I LOVE THIS BEAUTIFUL SONG, THESE TWO GROUPS AT THEIR BEST, THANK YOU FOR SHARING. RIP FLO AND LEVI , YOU BOTH ARE GONE BUT YOU WILL NEVER BE FOR GOTTEN.
The Diana Ross version is better. This is too busy.
Great track
