Sponge's self-titled album, Sponge, is a solid effort that showcases the band's grunge influences and hard rock sound. Released in 1994, the album features hit singles like "Plowed" and "Molly (16 Candles Down the Drain)," which helped the band gain popularity in the mid-90s alternative rock scene.
The album opens with the heavy guitar riffs of "Pennywheels," setting the tone for the rest of the album. Lead singer Vinnie Dombroski's raspy vocals are on full display throughout the record, particularly on tracks like "Neenah Menasha" and "Drownin'." The band's sound is rounded out by the tight rhythm section of bassist Tim Cross and drummer Jimmy Paluzzi.
