This is my all-time favourite Cello Concerto by Edward Elgar, and great performance by Jacqueline Du Pre and a great interpreter of English music [especially Delius, Elgar and Vaughan Williams] the great Sir John Barbirolli and voted the best 1965 recording as recommended by the BBC Radio 3 called Building A Library and The Penguin Guide To Recorded Classical Music. A great work.
Wednesday Series is awesome, it brought me here. I picked this version for the same intensity it was played on the series. Her career was cut short by multiple sclerosis, which forced her to stop performing at the age of 28; she died 14 years later at the age of 42. The best dies young.
She made this concerto her own. In my humble opinion no other version comes near to hers. Sadly I never saw her perform live but, on the day her death was announced, I played this version as my own personal tribute to a great soul.
The memories of her and her performances will be last a long long time
This cello concerto is, next to Dvorak's, the greatest cello concerto ever composed, and this performance by Jacquerline du Pre, with Sir John Barbirolli, is undoubtedly a truely great recording.
Du pre was the reincarnation of the Elgars late daughter

Inégalée, peut-être parce qu' inégalable!
A rendition never to be equaled <3
Just perfection - pure joy for my ears soul and ❤️
André Navarra play better this Concert
I have this CD. It takes me to a very special place. I forget time, and nothing else is important.
I'm so sad for her and for us. She was so beautiful!

Jaqueline is truly sublime, but in this recording sir Barbirolli gives her the wonder that is a truly great conductor. So much better than Barenboim that recorded it later.
It doesn't even take her four notes to send shivers down my spine. She played with such ferocity and yet with such sensitivity. So amazing. I almost can't listen to anyone else.
Her greatness lies not just in her skill but also how she manages to reveal the torment of the man who, having been born in the supposed glory of Victoria's reign came gradually to know the reality. It is all there in the music and she brought it out for us all. May God bless her
Divine. What movie stole this as it's sound tack?
???
I just wished they had the same recording device in our day and age! Imagine all the others players of her caliber we couldn't listen to!! Even Moravec had yeaaars he couldn't record because of his government, at least he left us beautiful nocturnes and ballades.
Damn, I think I love this.
Nobody mentions the contribution of JB in this magnificent performance. He was a great cellist before becoming a great conductor. This recording was a perfect collaboration of two like-minded superb artists.
Jacqueline du Pre is the only one for the cello concerto the
phrasing in the Adagio is sublime.................. Elgar was such an amazing
composer undeniably up there with Mozart and Beethoven and he wrote some of the
most beautiful music you can imagine. I am currently sharing my love for
Elgar's music by playing some new arrangements for violin and piano so people
can appreciate the full range of his output in "Elgar Through The
Years"......... Enjoy?

I play violin but I really want to learn to play cello now.
