Show Of Hands - Formerly Anthrax

kiookio

Review by Kiookio Sinar Jaya

Formerly Anthrax by Show of Hands is an album that showcases the band's impressive musicianship and songwriting skills. The album is a collection of 12 tracks that blend various genres, including folk, rock, and blues, to create a unique sound that is both energetic and soulful.

The album opens with the upbeat and catchy track "Country Life," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. The band's use of traditional instruments, such as the mandolin and accordion, adds a rustic feel to the music, while the electric guitar and drums give the songs a modern edge.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Cousin Jack," which tells the story of a Cornish miner who emigrates to America in search of a better life. The song's haunting melody and poignant lyrics make it a standout track that will stay with the listener long after the album has finished.

Another highlight of the album is "The Preacher," a bluesy track that showcases the band's versatility and ability to seamlessly blend different genres. The song's soulful vocals and gritty guitar riffs create a powerful and emotive listening experience.

About Show Of Hands

Psychedelic jazz-rock band formed in 1967, San Diego, CA, United States, and disbanded in 1972. In 1971, Jerry McCann moved to San Francisco, where he released an album on Elektra with a group of musicians with whom he had done a couple of gigs in the mid 60s. When the group was signed to Elektra, they were called Anthrax. In one of the many meetings, Jerry suggested to call the group "Formerly Anthrax". After arguing, the Elektra staff proposed to call the band "Show of Hands" (which Jerry used during his argument) and call the album "Formerly Anthrax". The group agreed, but when they played gigs or were asked what the name of the band was, they called themselves "Formerly Anthrax" and called their album "A Show of Hands". Shortly after the album came out, Jim Morrison passed away, Elektra was sold to Kinney Corp. which owned Atlantic/Atco/Warner Bros./Reprise and Mad Magazine. The new owners came in and fired everybody from the janitors on up and the saga of which came first, the album title or the band name came to a quick and final demise. About 10 years later, Elektra signed another band called . (Source: Jerry McCann)

I recorded background vocals for A Show Of Hands/ formerly Anthrax in the studio in L.A., and used to hang out with Rick, Mary and Jack
at a former boy's camp in Sonoma County. They were truly one of the first fusion groups. I also heard Jerry Hahn & the Brotherhood and later
worked with Jerry.

I have this LP. Apparently it's one of the worst selling albums ever released by Elektra. I think it stands up pretty well. I have great memories of seeing Jerry McCann's previous band, Framework, play some incredible gigs in San Diego, circa 1968-69.
