Renaissance - Richard IX

Review by Alison Catton

Renaissance's album Richard IX is a tour de force of progressive rock that showcases the band's signature sound and musical prowess. The album opens with the epic "Prologue," a sweeping instrumental that sets the tone for the rest of the record. The soaring vocals of Annie Haslam are a standout feature on tracks like "The Mystic and the Muse" and "The Queen and the Soldier," while the intricate guitar work of Michael Dunford and Terence Sullivan adds depth and texture to each song. The album's title track, "Richard IX," is an ambitious concept piece that tells the story of a fictional king and his struggles with power and love. With its lush arrangements and intricate melodies, Richard IX is a must-listen for fans of progressive rock and Renaissance's unique brand of art rock.

Renaissance was originally formed in London, UK, in 1969 by ex- vocalist and drummer who wanted to explore a new sound blending elements of rock, folk and classical music. Relf assumed the role of guitarist, and they were joined by bassist , keyboardist , and vocalist . This lineup recorded the first self-titled album and most of the second album, Illusion (1971). A rapid series of personnel changes followed. Guitarist and composer first appeared on Illusion. Before his departure from the band Hawken recruited new vocalist . By 1972, when the Renaissance recorded their third album, , none of the original members remained though McCarty still wrote music for the band. By 1973 the lineup had stabilized with Haslam, Dunford, keyboardist , bassist and vocalist , and drummer . This lineup produced a string of relatively successful albums over the remainder of the decade. They had one Top 10 single in the U.K., "
