To add to Roman's comments, Chinatown was picked by the influential US magazine, Trouser Press, as one of their Top Ten Independent Singles of 1980. In addition to playing Toronto, the band was invited by legendary booker Ruth Polski to perform at Hurrah in New York opening for The Know (the band Gary Valentine formed after leaving Blondie). Roman and I also songs for The B Girls who toured the US opening for The Clash.

The Popular Spies were first introduced as one of the top 10 winners of the first Q107 Indie Scene album with their single
" My International Girl". The album was released '70s with strong power-pop influences of British bands of the same era.
The band's self-produced single "Chinatown" was released later in 1980.
The "Spies" were well known on the Toronto indie scene as their popularity grew on the Toronto club scene and expanded to concert/club tours across Ontario.
